23rd November - Community Agroforestry Action Day
The Ediblescapes ecosystem, at this stage, resembles a young person shaping their vocational identity, values, ethics, and principles, which will define their personality as they mature. Ediblescapes is a community garden with its own character, intentionally designed as an open, communal, edible landscape. It has embarked on its journey as a permaculture-inspired food forest, evolving into a forest garden that uniquely integrates agroecology and biointensive food gardens. These gardens, grown under fruit trees, aim to provide socially responsible food for local neighbourhoods experiencing food insecurity.
Now, as a "young ecosystem," Ediblescapes is transforming into a syntropic agroforestry ecosystem—a biocultural garden with high-density biodiversity.
Over the years, Ediblescapes has gained recognition in urban agriculture, participating in local and national networks as a practical example of natural gardening practices. This year marks a significant transition: from the nurturing environment of Country Paradise Parkland to becoming a vital part of Gold Coast City Parks. This transition aligns with our mission of creating the first community agroforestry garden in the region.
Our garden reconciles regenerative conservation with urban food systems, adapting to the challenges of climate change. It is designed to withstand extreme weather, from intense storms to drought and bushfires, without relying on external inputs. Instead, it thrives on an interconnected soil-root system that captures water and nurtures life. This system generates stable humus fertility, sustaining a resilient biocultural agroforestry garden—an edible rainforest for future generations while addressing today's food insecurity.
Become an Agroforestry Gardener
Would you like to learn agroforestry by doing? Join us in creating a community agroforestry garden that fosters the skills of future agroforesters.
Ediblescapes has the potential to grow in multiple directions, but our primary focus is building a community capable of stewarding a biocultural syntropic agroforestry garden. This includes reconnecting with regenerative native forests while enhancing urban biodiversity.
Our ultimate goal is to cultivate a thriving agroforestry community in the region.
This Month’s Action Day: Saturday, 23rd November
We invite you to be part of this exciting transformation during our monthly Community Agroforestry Action Day.
This month's event includes a change in schedule: our guest agroforester and farmer, Daniel Rodgers (Didj), will join us earlier than planned to cover for our admired agroforestry pioneer, Bunya Halasz. Bunya has been presented with an incredible opportunity to share knowledge and learn from South Pacific Islander agroforestry cultures. He will return to share his experiences on Saturday, 18th January 2025.
Meanwhile, we are fortunate to welcome Didj, who brings a wealth of experience in syntropic and permaculture gardening and farming. He has collaborated with pioneers on numerous projects, offering hands-on and conversational experiences in creating syntropic systems.
Cultural Food and Community Spirit
Cultural food plays a central role in Ediblescapes' biocultural vision. During the event, we will harvest produce from the garden and prepare cultural dishes with the help of our Brazilian friends Anna-Cacau. You are welcome to contribute by sharing your family or community recipes.
Everyone is welcome! Book your spot now!
