The Digital Development Project (DDP) is a dramaturg-led collaborative dedicated to connecting emerging playwrights and dramaturgs—two often-overlooked groups that are shaping the next generation of theatre. 

Over the past few years, the theatre industry has faced many changes, and one of the biggest gaps we saw was the lack of opportunities for emerging playwrights and dramaturgs to connect and develop new work—especially for those outside major theatre institutions and markets.

That’s why we started DDP—to foster community and opportunity for emerging theatremakers, using the digital realm for more expansive opportunities. 

Our mission is to champion industry best practices, including non-hierarchical working models and process-driven creative spaces, while providing equitable pay structures and offering dramaturgical developmental opportunities for playwrights free of charge.

Over the past year and a half, we have:

• Connected over 30 emerging playwrights with their dramaturg match for three hours of one-on-one dramaturgical development. 

• Produced three virtual play readings and one virtual new play workshop as part of our Playshare Evolution Play Festival, with dramaturgical support every step of the way. 

• Partnered with the SheLA Summer Theater Festival to support development of four new works by gender-marginalized playwrights. 

• Engaged with actors, playwrights, dramaturgs, and producers at all stages of their career as we build our DDP community. 

• Welcomed the Apprentice Circle, a cohort of apprentice dramaturgs who will learn and work alongside us over this next year.

• Launched our DDP Workshop Season, a series of workshops on hot topics and helpful resources for dramaturgs, playwrights, and curious artists.  

We are so proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish in our time, but we need your help to continue this important work.

We ask you to consider a donation to Fund the Development Project and to help us continue to create impactful programming for emerging playwrights and dramaturgs. 
 

$75 funds a guest speaker for our Workshop Season

$150 funds a playwright/dramaturg match, providing the playwright with three one-on-one dramaturgy sessions over a three month period 

$600 funds a mini-match between three playwrights and three Apprentice Circle dramaturgs 

$1500 funds an entire play reading for an emerging playwright, complete with a curated cast of actors, direction, dramaturgical sessions, and a developmental talkback after the reading

If 25 people commit to a monthly $10 donation this December, we can raise $1500 by June!
