The WaterMarkers are one of the core features of our city-scale project in Milwaukee. Each solar-powered marker is topped with an illuminated letter that flashes different patterns to signal the community before rain events. The letters are chosen by local community groups, signifying water-related words that are meaningful to them. A WaterMarker costs CALL $30,000; the foundation alone is $5,000. You can help us accellerate our next round of markers with your donation today.
Public walks have always been a major piece of CALL/City as Living Laboratory’s exploration of the environmental and social concerns local communities have, and are a key part of our efforts to initiate productive, responsive, and interesting collaborations. The walks are the seeds from which all CALL’s projects grow. Sponsor a CALL/WALK today and plant seeds for the future. $2,000 covers the cost of running a walk and creating resources for others to revisit it.
One of our most important new community intiatives in Milwaukee is our artist leadership program, where more established local artists mentor young artists on how to use the creative tools at their disposal to become local environmental leaders. $1,000 will cover one month of mentorship for a young artist.
CALL/TALKS is a new monthly lunchtime converation series, where artists involved in or alighned with our work share their experiences, insights, and ideas. Your support of $500 can sponsor one of these programs and help turn these events into a podcast series.
The centerpiece of Maya Ciarrocchi and Francheska Alcantara's collaborative work this summer in the NorthWest Bronx is a mural proposed for Van Cortlandt Park. This mural will feature a new artwork by Ciarrocchi that draws from historial maps of the region, and will be supported by a series of plaques throught the neighborhood that trace the origianal route of Tibbetts Brook and a web resource that shares community water stories. If 10 donors can contribute $250, that will cover the material cost of the mural.
Two of our 2021 projects in Chinatown involve creating resources we plan to distribute at low cost to local shops. Tattfoo Tan's WuXing Oracle Cards is a beautifully painted deck of cards featuring produce items with traditional medicinal benefits. Stephen Fan and Myles Zhang's Pedestrian Observations street map will be an illustrated map celebrating street life with accompanying community resources. $125 will supply 5 sets of both the cards and the map to a shop.
Tibbetts Estuary Tapestry is a proposal by Matthew Lopéz-Jensen and Ana De La Cueva for a large-scale quilted reimaging of the Tibbetts Brook Estuary. In this community project, local residents will embroider their visions of ways that the neighborhood could become greener. $75 will provide a local resident with an embrodery kit and and a spot in a workshop to advance the project.
