Mission and History

The mission of Atlanta Grade School Friends is to restore the historic Atlanta-Miller Grade School located on Miller Street in Atlanta, Texas. In addition to renovation of the building and the continued maintenance thereof, Atlanta Grade School Friends oversees the development and management of educational programs and related activities for all ages that enhance the building's usefulness.

Atlanta-Miller Grade School is a unique WPA-era school building dating from 1936. It took 120 days to complete construction of the school, and it opened for the fall semester that year. After many years of neglect, a group of former students and community advocates purchased the property, cleaned and stabilized it. In 2023, the building was removed from the Preservation Texas "most endangered" list of historic sites, in view of our dedicated efforts the past few decades. We are now planning full restoration of the school and we are seeking National Register status. Ultimately, we will create both a new historic site and a modern community center for educational programming of all kinds.
