Backpack Friends, Incorporated provides healthy, shelf-stable food to at-risk kids who've been identified with 'food insecurity'.
In 2014, Pflugerville ISD joined with a handful of local churches to help feed kids who were identified with 'food insecurity'. Tom and Heather Cottar put together a small team to help feed 12 at-risk kids at a nearby elementary school. Each weekend, their volunteers would shop, organize, pack, and deliver healthy, shelf-stable food to help bridge the gap.
Today, Backpack Friends, Incorporated is a 501c3 charity recognized by the IRS. Your tax-deductible donation of $29 helps feed a child suffering from hunger for the month. (That's just $1 per day!) Today we've distributed over 10,000 backpacks of food and we're only just getting started.
By building relationships with school administrations, private and corporate sponsors, and local community organizations, Backpack Friends is bridging the gap for kids with hunger issues. We believe that no child in our society should ever go hungry. We believe that the truest test of compassion is how we treat those among us who are most vulnerable. And we believe that if no one else works to alleviate childhood hunger, we will.
Hunger is complicated. Feeding a child isn't.
