Our Second Annual Defender of Justice Luncheon was a fantastic, insirational event! James Forman Jr., our keynote speaker, discussed his new book, Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America, and what this generation must do to end mass incarceration. We were inspired by Rachel McGruder, our Advocate of the Year, who told how she turned her experience with debtors' prison into a passion for advocacy. We were pleased to honor the Austin Justice Coalition, a Black-led group of activists that works to improve the quality of life for Black Austinites, who are historically and systematically impacted by gentrification, segregation, over-policing, and a dearth of educational and employment opportunities.
