Parental removal is not a word that slips off the tongue easily, nor shouldn’t. Those two words, parental removal, speak to the trauma that ten million children and their families face nationwide. Parental removal is the act of the state removing parents or primary caregivers from their children because those parents are perceived to have, or they have actually violated the criminal-legal-immigration system.
Youth Rise Texas believes that schools can address the trauma of parental incarceration, detention, and deportation and its impact on learning by adopting a healing-centered framework for education.
Youth Rise Texas has been working tirelessly over the last year to understand the impact of parental removal on youth. Through gathering more than 500 interviews from Austin area youth, they have collected data about their experiences with policing in schools and how it affects their lives. In September 2023, Youth Rise Texas will release this data with an immersive art exhibit and black paper that will help to paint a picture of the impact of parental removal on youth. The exhibit and black paper will be available to view online, aiming to share the stories of those impacted by parental removal in a powerful way that resonates with their peers and community members. They hope this data can help inform policy change so that we can address the trauma youth face across America face due to parental removal.
