Soul Artillery is memorializing the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with a tower climb at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) Observation Tower. The event honors the victims and heroes from the 9/11 tragedy. The Soul Artillery Brand is joining the Samaritan Center in Austin, Tx for this event to raise funds that support Veterans, children, and civilian adults. The Samaritan Center has been serving individuals and families in Central Texas for more than 45 years. We both envision a healthy and compassionate community where every individual achieves mental, physical, spiritual and social wellbeing. The goal is to heal hearts, provide hope, and enhance lives.
The funds raised from this event will go to the Samaritan Center and used to make our goal a continued reality. Join our team the Soul Artillery Climbers for this one day event. The view from the top of the tower will be nothing less than spectacular and well worth the climb. Thinking you can't make a difference? Think again. These statistics from the VA, the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Corporation for Supportive Housing and Watson Institute of International and Public Affairs show otherwise:
- PTSD sufferers are at a higher risk for heart disease, RA, bronchitis, asthma, liver, and peripheral arterial disease.
- Veterans are 200% more likely to be diagnosed with a disease within 5 years from returning from deployment.
- Over 968,000 veterans lived in poverty in the last year.
- 20,000 veterans with government sponsored mortgages lost their homes in 2010.
- 76% of homeless veterans experience alcohol, drug, or mental health issues.
- 30.2% of veterans ages 18-24 are unemployed.
- 89% received an honorable discharge.
- 67% served 3 years or more.
- 47% are Vietnam veterans.
- 15% served before Vietnam.
- 5.5% are Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.
- Veterans are 1.5 times more likely to commit suicide than people who have never served in the military.
- According to the National Suicide Data Report for 2005-2016, suicide rates among veterans age 18 to 34 have been swelling steadily for more than 10 years, jumping 10% from 2015 to 2016 alone.
- The same report also states that the rate for those young veterans increased to 45 suicide deaths per 100,000 populations in 2016, up from 40.4 in 2015, even as the overall veteran suicide rate decreased slightly.
- Only 30% of veterans are enrolled in VA care, and there are reports that find disparities in that care given.
This is nothing less than distressing. These numbers speak to the inadequacy in current treatment and neglect to those who have sacrificed.

About COTA Observation Tower
Towering 251-feet into the Austin sky is the iconic Observation Tower. COTA’s colorful centerpiece features an array of 18 red, decorative steel pipes that flow from above the observation deck, down its north side. The Tower is 25 stories up and has 419 stairs. Participants will climb the stairs to the observation deck and back down twice to mimic the number of stairs in the World Trade Center's twin towers.
