" The image picked to showcase is of Mike Parsons surfing a Guiness book world record wave after being towed in by Brad Gerlach at Cortes Bank, January 5, 2008. This trip was featured on ESPN and was the most rewarding adventure ever achieved by this photographer as conditions on the coastline were nearly impossible to boat out into. Numerous Winter storms had combined to make extremely rough conditions as well as an almost impossible calculation that it would be surfable by time they arrived. In the end, a window of opportunity was achieved and numerous record setting waves were ridden and we came home all safe. This particular wave happened as the sun broke through the clouds and the wind went still to offshore for an hour or so between the next storm." " The Gold Coast’s Billy Watson, deep, down South… There’s still numerous unknown and unsurfed waves lurking in the depths of oceans around the world. Slowly but surely they are getting picked off. I found this wave located 60km off the bottom of Australia’s coastline in the early 2000’s by pouring hours over fishing and navel charts, spending weeks on several occasions on its coastline and making friends with fisherman who surfed and had an inkling about big, notorious waves breaking in the middle of nowhere. It took me close to a decade to pull together a team of surfers, to wait for the right conditions and to find a fishing captain and his boat willing to take us out onto a mission into the unknown. A serious storm almost shut us down on our way out there and we were forced to hide behind an island for two days before venturing the final 20km and we waited… Finally the swell started pumping around noon and Burleigh’s Billy Watson was towed into this beast by his close mate Jamie Mitchell. I was hand holding a 600mm lens, perched high up on a mast pole, being violently swung back and forward, to and fro as the ocean bounced the 100ft prawn trawler around like a cork in the middle of the ocean, far, far away from any landmark. I had no idea if I’d come even close to getting this wave captured without the framing being upside down, sideways or even in focus, until it was opened on a computer. What is art? I find it as the story behind the capture and how it is perceived in the eyes and the mind of the beholder as to how it speaks to them."
