More About our Guest Teachers:
Gillian Hodler, Community Engagement and Volunteer Coordinator at TreeFolks with a mission is to empower Central Texans to build stronger communities through planting and caring for trees.
Gillian grew up in New York City, and always loved climbing trees. She moved to Austin in 1999, on a bicycle, and immediately felt at home in the beautiful parks and abundant green spaces. She studies plants through many different lenses, including organic gardening, permaculture, herbalism, and edible wild foods. As a community volunteer Gillian has worked with many local organizations, including the Central Texas Seed Savers, and the 5604 Manor Community Garden in East Austin. Gillian joined TreeFolks in October 2018, and has previously served as the NeighborWoods Program Assistant, and the Tree Watering Coordinator for Austin Environmental Heroes. She loves to talk to anyone who will listen about why we should all be Tree Folks.
Darlene Starr, Teacher at Wildflower School provides transformative holistic herbal education, specializing in bioregional, local plants, gardening, and herb clinics.
Darlene will introduce us to many of the medicinal plants in the forest, representing Wildflower School of Botanical Medicine, where she is also an instructor and staff member, and leads the school’s sponsored chapter of Herbalists Without Borders.
Darlene Starr is an earth steward, nature educator, and community herbalist. She is the founder and caretaker of Rooted Relations Botanical Sanctuary, working in partnership with nature and United Plant Savers for the conservation of medicinal plants and their habitats.
At the Sanctuary, Darlene hosts gatherings centered around wellness, eco-stewardship, permaculture, plant knowledge, and wisdom shared by a culturally diverse community.
The Sanctuary is also home to a community seed, plant and garden supply exchange with a mission of growing native plants for wildlife and pollinators, providing accessibility to locally grown food and medicine, and honoring the native flora, fauna, and First Peoples of the Land.
