WHO ARE WE?
Established in 2015, the H.T. Lockard Foundation was formed with the purpose of assisting the Ben F. Jones Chapter of the National Bar Association to achieve its long-term goals. As a nonprofit corporation with 501 (c)(3) status, this foundation aims to collaborate with the Ben F. Jones executive board to develop and maintain long-term strategies, provide stability to the chapter as it changes administration each year, and create fundraising opportunities to help the Ben F. Jones Chapter of the National Bar Association to further fulfill its mission, goals, and overall purpose.
The Honorable HT Lockard
Our namesake, the Honorable Hon. HT Lockard was born in Lauderdale County, TN in 1920 and licensed to practice law in 1951, Judge H.T. Lockard helped pave the way for black politicians to come when he was elected to the old Shelby County Court (now the Shelby County Commission) in 1964. He also was a Shelby County Criminal Court Judge from 1975 until his retirement in 1994. As a lawyer during the 1950s and 1960s, he was involved in cases that challenged segregation in education, recreation, and transportation.
