Professor Emerita Elena Sonbok McMillan is an accomplished artist, educator, and leader based in Knoxville, Tennessee.  She holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA) and has received numerous awards and accolades for her work. Elena is also an experienced educator with a Master of Education degree from Hyles Anderson College. She has taught as a Professor of Art at multiple Universities throughout the United States and has developed an innovative curriculum and teaching methods that engage and inspire her students. Her passion for education and her commitment to promoting art and cultural understanding is a driving force for her non-profit work. Finally, Elena holds a Master of Arts degree in English from Texas A&M, Corpus Christi, and has had a number of her art pieces added to museums and was selected as the head artist for a number of large installations and art pieces in museums in Southern California. Keris, a sword or dagger originally from the Java Island in Indonesia, is an infamous Indonesian cultural artifact created by a master blacksmith called “Empu”. Empus are highly respected craftsmen with additional knowledge in literature, history, and occult sciences. The Keris is believed to be both a weapon and an important spiritual object by many Indonesia Ancestors. The artifact is worn in everyday life and at special ceremonies. The Keris is also seen as a sanctified family heirloom that is typically handed down through successive generation, and is an indicator of social status; or even a symbol of heroism. Given the longstanding importance and history behind this artifact, a sense of spirituality and mythology developed around it. In regard to this specific artifact, it is known as Keris Dhapur Sepang. The name is derived from the intent in which this Keris was made by the Empu. A Keris Dhapur Sepang is made with a straight and symmetrical blade, curated through spiritual process by the Empu to bring love and harmonization to the family.  (Note: the photo depicts that exact Keris Dhapur Sepand auctioned with the sheath on.)
