“Ignition: Lighting Fires in a Burning World” By M.R. O’Connor, 2023 Hardcover edition “Ignition” is a work of on-the-ground reporting into the science of, and cultural ideas around, wildfires and fire management that challenges the ethos of the conservation movement, offering a hopeful vision of the connection between humans and our environment. In a riveting investigation of the science and ecology of wildfires, journalist M.R. O'Connor ventures into some of the oldest, most beautiful, and remote forests in North America to explore the powerful and ancient relationship between trees, fires, and humans. Along the way, she describes revelatory research in the fields of paleobotany and climate science to show how the world's forests have been shaped by fire for hundreds of millions of years. She also reports on the compelling archeological evidence emerging from the field of ethnoecology that proves how, until very recently, humans were instigators of forest fires, actively molding and influencing the ecosystems around them by inserting themselves into the loop of a natural biological process to start "good fires." As she weaves together first-hand reportage with research and cultural insights, O'Connor also embeds on fire lines alongside firefighters and "pyrotechnicians." These highly trained individuals are resurrecting the practice of prescribed burning to sustain fire-dependent forest ecologies and prevent the catastrophic wildfires that are increasing in frequency and intensity because of global warming. Hailing from diverse backgrounds including state and federal agencies, scientific laboratories, and private lands and tribal nations, these fire starters are undertaking a radical and often controversial effort to promote, protect, and expand the responsible use of fire to restore ecological health to landscapes. At the heart of Ignition is a discussion about risk and how our relationship to it as a society will determine our potential to survive the onslaught of climate change. Donated by Amanda Haralson

The Red-cockaded Woodpecker (Dryobates borealis) has been downlisted from endangered to threatened, thanks in large part to relocation efforts and artificial cavity inserts. Artificial cavity inserts like this one are placed into live trees that meet the diameter requirements to support a cavity, but the tree is not old enough to have developed red heart disease, decaying the heartwood of the tree. This artificial cavity insert served its time (4-6 years) in lower Alabama at Conecuh National Forest before TLA staff replaced this box with a new insert. This is a great conversation piece and a perfect addition to any longleaf enthusiast's office or study. Donated by Jacob Barrett

A Message from the Artist My name is Debra Keazer and I have been working on pine needle baskets for 9 years. I have taken 3 classes over the years to learn more. Plus, I have learned using videos. I previously made other baskets for 24 years using reed, ash and honeysuckle and Antler baskets before having carpal tunnel surgery on both hands. I enjoy pine needle baskets as I can incorporate beadwork with them. I did beadwork before all the basket work. I am ½ Cherokee enrolled with the Cherokee nation in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. I retired in May of 2022 and in 2023 found out about the Trail of Tears Art Show in Tahlequah and the Cherokee Homecoming Art Show. I won 2nd place in the Cherokee Homecoming Art Show in 2023 for Emerging Artist. This year I entered the Red Earth Art Show and won the spot for Emerging Artist. I entered the regular art show and won first place for one of my baskets. I have taught a few classes and taught some teens for one year. I had this specific longleaf basket in mind for the longleaf conference. I sure hope you like it.  Donated by Debra Keazer

A Message from the Artist Growing up in south Arkansas and east Texas, pine tree forests were my playground, and pine needles and pine cones were some of my favorite toys. I now prefer longleaf pine needles, which I gather mostly in east Texas and northern Louisiana. I have planted 3 longleaf pine trees on my property and hope to use only my own needles at some point. I treat my needles with glycerin to make them more pliable and easier to work with. If I want to dye the needles, I dry fresh green needles in the dark for as much as 3 months. Dried green needles take the dye more readily. Needles collected after falling from the tree in the fall, if collected early and have remained dry and clean, are already a beautiful variety of brown shades. I prefer waxed linen and artificial sinew for stitching, but I have used braided poly cord, embroidery thread, and even cotton cording. I have always used a center piece to start my coiling. The center influences the design and color of the baskets, its intended use, and the recipient, whether it is a gift or a commission piece. Inspiration can come from almost anywhere - other art forms, books, internet sites, previous baskets, and gourds pieces I have made, Native American pieces, the sweetgrass baskets made by the Gullah Geechee descendants and followers in the South Carolina region, pottery, and even fabrics and printed paper for color combinations. After almost 80 years of producing utilitarian and decorative stoneware, it is no surprise that McCoy has a large collection of wares. Ranging from vases, flower pots, and planters to cookie jars, McCoy is highly collectible and very popular amongst antique collectors. If you’re a fan of fine pottery, chances are you’ve heard the name McCoy. Most McCoy pottery is still sold today because of its excellent craftsmanship. “Leaf Lines” by artist Booker Morey Numbered and Signed 3D Nature Wall Art - Framed Matted Shadow Box Features Sugar leaves framed and matted in a shadow box frame. The leaves were individually hand-processed to show the natural detailed display of veins. The etching technique is sometimes used in semiconductor manufacturing. The leaves are both flexible and stable. They do not crumble as time passes, although they may curl with humidity. While the colors are light-stable, they may fade after many years. Signed and numbered 17/ 773. Approximately 11”x14”. Donated by Ruth Cook
