Brush Pot with Gold, 2019 Glazed ceramic and gold lustre 7" x 7" x 7 1/2" Jeffry Mitchell (b. 1958, Seattle, WA) is an artist well versed in ceramic traditions from around the globe. He earned a BA in Painting from the University of Dallas in 1980, and an MFA in Printmaking at the Tyler School of Art in 1988. His work references Early American glazes, Pennsylvania Dutch pickle jars, asymmetrical Japanese aesthetic decisions and Chinese Foo Dogs. His work eschews refinements that commonly accompany many ceramic processes. The resulting pieces radiate an exuberant, unbridled immediacy. He feels that this unfettered approach is essentially relatable to our shared human experience. The imagery he uses is also very accessible: bears, elefants (he prefers ‘f’ to ‘ph’), bunnies and flowers appear over and over in his work and although they can definitely be related to his own personal story, he feels that these too spring from an early and universally familiar place. Mitchell seeks to tap into and broadcast a sense of vitality whether it be joyful, or colored with a more complex mix of emotions in his work. This throughline can been seen in the thick, dripping glazes, the unabashed appropriation of decorative motifs and an unmistakeable suffusion of playfulness. His work is in numerous prestigious collections including the Smithsonian, Seattle Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Philadelphia Art Museum, and Fogg Art Museum of Harvard University. He received his MFA degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2010. Over the past two decades, Bradley has developed a sculptural language around representation, poetics of ordinary subjects, trompe l’oeil techniques, and exhibition as site for the imagination. He aims to use this creative language to encourage his audience to practice the suspension of disbelief as a method for reconsidering and understanding this shared common world. He has presented solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Shane Campbell Gallery, Roberto Paradise, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Raleigh, as well as group exhibitions including The Renaissance Society, Atlanta Contemporary, Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, the NRW-Forum, and the Elmhurst Art Museum. Untitled, 2018 mixed media - acrylic, paper, string, foam, textiles, found objects 17" x 18" x 17" As a non-verbal artist, Hubert utilizes his art-making process as a tool for connection and communication with others. With the help of support staff and volunteers, Hubert builds multidimensional sculptures, amassing an array of materials collected from around the studio. His additive method of layering creates finished objects that are otherworldly. He can often be found laughing as he paints, opening himself up to the world around him and to the community of the studio. Hubert’s process is so intrinsically linked with his own personal exploration that his progress is a beautiful thing to observe. Born and raised in Chicago, Posey’s work was recently included in "OUT 2021" at Galerie C.O.A. in Montreal, "Do U Dig" at Good Weather, and previously in "In Good Company" at the Chicago Cultural Center and "All Well and Good" at Circle Contemporary. https://artsoflife.org/artists/hubert-posey/ |

Invitation to an Image, 2019 linen, wood, rubber, stamp pad, foam, graphite, ceramic, magnet and paper 14" x 10.88" x 2.5" Mika Horibuchi (b. 1991, San Francisco, CA) is a Chicago based artist. She earned a BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2015. She deftly uses trompe-l’oeil as a conceptual framework to explore the intersection of truth and artifice. Her images of curtains, blinds and screens are rendered to create illusions that conceal as much as they reveal. Although conspicuously recognizable, her subjects can slip into the fissures of visual perception to simultaneously hide and reveal.Recent solo and group exhibitions include A Tale of Today, Nate Young and Mika Horibuchi, The Driehaus Museum, Chicago, IL (2020); Bortolami Gallery, New York, NY (2021); Mika Horibuchi: Chicago Works, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago IL (2018); Una vida domestica, Salon ACME, Mexico City, MX (2018); On Anxiety, Cleve Carney Gallery, College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn, IL (2018); Good News, Ralph Arnold Gallery, Loyola University, Chicago IL (2018), Jessica Silverman Gallery, San Francisco, CA (2019), KMAC Museum, Lexington, KY (2019) and Andrew Rafacz Gallery, Chicago, IL (2019). Bête Noire, 2018 Acrylic, spray enamel & epoxy resin on shaped wood 20" x 16" x 2" Francesco Lo Castro's (b. 1976, Catania, Italy) was raised in Germany and transplanted to South Florida where he became immersed in the graffiti, punk and music scenes. He quickly found a foothold in the creative arts with a diverse technical range and a strong social message. His work examines the underlying nodes that make up physical reality through the use of historically grounding visual elements, reminiscent of Italian Futurism, 1980’s analog computer graphics, and Art Deco color palettes. At its center lies a drive to recollect and arrest memories, as well as a future-forward aesthetic that dares to question the boundaries of biology and technology, the physical and the virtual, charting a holistic, common space within the increasingly fluid boundaries that are shaping contemporary culture. www.francescolocastro.com, @locastro |

A Dad's Love, 2020 graphite on paper 11'' x 9'' *framed Ardillio Anderson (also known as Hector Jones) has cultivated a praxis of methodical, portrait-based artwork. He studies the nuances of facial expressions and presents them to the viewer with empathy and vulnerability. The resulting works are easily relatable yet powerful. “I’m just trying to make it look as realistic as possible but have my own little twist. I put my own style to it. It’s time consuming but it’s fun.” His style is rooted in low contrast graphite drawings punctuated with colored pencil and ink, though his most recent works have evolved to incorporate an increased measure of saturated colors. For Anderson, art making functions as a reprieve from the stresses of every day life. “It gets me away from being bored or in front of the TV or in my room all day. I can listen to music and do art at the same time. It lets me be free to do something other than be bored. I can get out there and people can look at my stuff.” Anderson is also a member of the studio’s band, Van Go Go. He has exhibited at the Chicago Cultural Center, the Chazen Museum of Art in Wisconsin and the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago. Anderson was also interviewed in a Chicago Athletic Association podcast featuring Arts of Life in 2019. @ardillio_anderson2880 |

The Sight, 2021 colored pencil, paper 17'' x 10'' *framed Hannah Pratt’s artwork is rooted simultaneously in fantasy and realism. She creates lush colored pencil drawings that feature felines from the book series, Warriors, by Erin Hunter. “For people who are familiar with the work, they will know it instantly without me having to say anything. The Warriors fandom is huge! It’s been going on for over 15 years… a decade and a half! I’ve been a fan since 2005. I want to become known for these drawings and have people anticipate them and talk to me about them if they’re familiar with the source. I love talking about warrior cats! I want them to anticipate what I do next.” Each work is brought to life through Pratt’s masterful rendering of shadow and light. She draws with a high investment in exactitude, and this attention to detail results in exquisitely rendered scenes. Careful blending and layers of pigment produce bold works, yet Pratt’s treatment of her subject matter relays a softness indicative of the artist’s observant nature. “The recreation of it. Well it’s measuring out the proportions and basically redrawing the original. It’s really fun because I get to see the colors the artist used and I get to choose from my pencils to mix them together and try to get a similar color. To watch it come to life, I guess. At the end, you’re like “I made that!” I just want to be the best I can be.” Hannah just completed her first year at Arts of Life, and welcomes artwork commissions. White Mallow Can't Jump, 2019 Acrylic on shaped MDF panel, three elements; 8" x 8" x 3/4" (each) Eric Ruschman’s paintings are witty reflections on popular culture. In television production vernacular, “easter eggs” are coy inside jokes or special features situated in widely consumed media. This is precisely how Ruschman structures his ornate and highly chromatic paintings. The launchpads for these geometric abstractions and woodworked shaped panels are those of the gaymer, the sissy, and the fan boy. He draws from diverse source materials from film and television, fashion, design, and architecture as a means of recapitulating anecdotes from our shared cultural pasts and present. His buoyantly colorful, abstract paintings playfully engage with Modernist notions of distillation. Ruschman’s solo exhibition, CRIBS, at Circa Modern was comprised of a set of new paintings constructed from references to furniture that appeared in beloved TV shows like The Golden Girls, Frasier, The X-Files, and The Simpsons. These abstractions of patios, armchairs, and window dressings were exhibited in tableau of Modern furniture selected from the holdings of Chicago furniture dealer Donald Schmaltz. The resultant installations posed not only amusing interactions between “as seen on TV” décor and icons of Modernist design, but also instigated a lighthearted look at how painting is positioned within these desirably designed scenarios. Clichés are rendered with tenderness, and high forms of Modernism are detected then made to dance in commonplace contemporary contexts. www.ericruschman.com | ruschman.blue | @ericruschman |
